Antiguo – Gonzalo Rubalcaba & Cuban Quartet

Antiguo is a studio album by Cuban pianist and composer Gonzalo Rubalcaba, recorded with his ensemble Cuban Quartet and originally released in 1998 through Blue Note Records.

The work marks a conceptual turning point in the musician's discography by blending post-bop structures and electronic fusion with liturgical elements from Yoruba tradition and Afro-Cuban percussion. The core lineup features Reynaldo Melián on trumpet, Felipe Cabrera on bass, and Julio Barreto on drums. Additionally, it features special guest appearances by percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo and vocalists Lázaro Ros and Maridalia Hernández.

Grammy-nominated in the Best Latin Jazz Performance category, the album stands out for its balance between synthetic instrumentation, academic composition rigor, and the freedom of collective improvisation.
