Avishai Cohen – Bassist and Composer

Avishai Cohen is one of the most influential figures in contemporary jazz. Born in Kabri, Israel, his career has been marked by a constant pursuit of authenticity, bringing the heritage of his multicultural roots—with Greek, Spanish, and Polish influences—to the vibrant epicenter of the New York scene.

His technique, forged at the Jerusalem Academy and refined during his formative years alongside Chick Corea in the Origin ensemble, has allowed him to transition the double bass from an accompanying role to a leading, narrative voice. As a bandleader, Cohen has explored configurations as diverse as the classic trio, string ensembles, and orchestral projects, always maintaining a distinctive signature based on groove, melodic clarity, and a stylistic openness that integrates pop, Sephardic music, and classicism.
