Heaven and Earth – Kamasi Washington

Heaven and Earth is the fourth studio album by American saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington, released in 2018 through Young Turks Recordings. Conceived as a work divided between Earth and Heaven, the project contrasts the perception of the external world with an exploration of inner identity.

The album expands Washington’s musical language through a large ensemble featuring musicians including Dontae Winslow, Ryan Porter, Cameron Graves, Brandon Coleman, Miles Mosley, Ronald Bruner Jr., and Tony Austin, alongside choir and orchestra.

Through original compositions and reinterpretations of pieces such as “Fists of Fury” and “Hub-Tones,” Heaven and Earth connects post-bop, jazz-funk, soul, Afro-Latin rhythms, and orchestral arrangements within an expansive vision of contemporary jazz.
