Isambulo – Linda Sikhakhane
Isambulo is the third studio album by South African saxophonist and composer Linda Sikhakhane. The record proposes a neo-Afro-jazz aesthetic that beautifully intertwines the heritage of Zulu folk music with contemporary jazz currents and the improvisational spirit of the New York scene.
The recording features an international ensemble comprising Lucca Fries, Fabien Iannone, Jonas Ruther, El Hadji Ngari Ndong, trumpeter Matthias Spillmann, and the vocals of Paras and Anna Widauer.
Through this intricate instrumental fabric, the album explores concepts deeply rooted in spiritual freedom, ancestral lineage, and modal exploration, utilizing dynamic structures and sharp rhythmic contrasts. The repertoire balances introspective compositions built on hypnotic ostinatos with high-energy passages of free improvisation, solidifying a narrative where South African tradition serves as the axis of a global, syncretic dialogue.
