Kathrine Windfeld – Pianist, Composer, and Bandleader
Kathrine Windfeld is a Danish pianist, composer, and big band leader whose career has become a benchmark for the revitalization of the big band format within European contemporary jazz. Her academic background includes musicology studies at the University of Copenhagen—specializing in the analysis of Central European musical modernity—and jazz piano training at the Malmö Academy of Music.
Throughout her career, she has led her own sextet and her acclaimed big band, in addition to collaborating as a guest conductor and composer for internationally renowned ensembles such as the Frankfurt Radio Big Band and the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra.
Her compositional style stands out for integrating sophisticated harmonic passages, high-intensity rhythmic ostinatos, and a rigorous command of collective dynamics, allowing swing tradition to coexist with free jazz and rock elements.
Honored with accolades such as the Ben Webster Prize and the Rising Stars Jazz Award, Windfeld’s vision redefines large ensemble music, conceiving it as a living, malleable, and constantly evolving sonic system.
Her album ALDEBARAN shines for its sensitivity, versatility, and improvisation, merging ballads with powerful jazz compositions. Her work explores cosmic themes, tension, and the dialogue between instruments, positioning her as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary European jazz.
