Mamiko Watanabe – Pianist and Composer

Mamiko Watanabe is a Japanese pianist and composer born in Fukuoka and based in New York, whose work connects the jazz piano tradition with an approach centered on rhythm, improvisation, and collective interplay.

She began studying piano at the age of four and later received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music. She was a semifinalist in the Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition in 2002 and 2003 and received the DownBeat Student Award in the Jazz Soloist category in 2003.

After settling in New York, Watanabe developed her career as both a bandleader and collaborator, performing alongside musicians including Joe Lovano, Kevin Mahogany, and Bobby McFerrin, as well as appearing at venues such as the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club, and the Kennedy Center.

Her discography as a leader began with One After Another in 2005, followed by Origin/Jewel, Mother Earth, and Flying Without Wings. In 2024, she released her fifth album, Being Guided by the Light, alongside Santi Debriano and Billy Hart.
