Sun-Mi Hong — drummer and composer

Sun-Mi Hong is a South Korean-born, Amsterdam-based drummer and composer recognized as one of the most singular and fast-rising voices within the contemporary jazz scene in Europe.

Her performance approach stands out for the integration of rhythmic patterns from the Korean tradition with the currents of free improvisation and avant-garde jazz, characterized by a dynamic control that ranges from meditative restraint to cathartic outburst.

Winner of the SENA Dutch Jazz Competition (2018) and the Edison Award (2021), Hong has solidified her aesthetic vision primarily through her quintet—a project founded in 2017 focused on organic interaction and the development of complex sonic textures.

Her work, especially the album Fourth Page: Meaning of a Nest, explores the intersections between identity, migration, and belonging. Her compositional style, described as architectural and visual, centers on textural depth and emotional sincerity.
