Sweetback – British Band

Sweetback is a British musical project formed by Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, and Paul Denman, musicians from Sade. The group emerged following the Love Deluxe world tour, during Sade Adu’s hiatus.

Their music extends elements found in Sade’s work into a combination of soul, jazz, dub, trip-hop, ambient, and electronic music that the members have described as “global soul music.”

Sweetback released their self-titled debut in 1996, featuring guest vocals from Amel Larrieux, Maxwell, Leroy Osbourne, and Bahamadia, while also developing a significant part of their repertoire through instrumental compositions.

The project provides an independent space for the interplay between Matthewman’s saxophone and guitar, Hale’s keyboards, and Denman’s bass, emphasizing rhythm, production, and the construction of atmosphere.
