Sweetback – Sweetback

Sweetback is the self-titled debut album by Sweetback, a project formed by Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, and Paul Denman, members of Sade, during the hiatus that followed the Love Deluxe tour.

Released in 1996, the album develops an approach the group itself described as “global soul music,” connecting soul, jazz, dub, trip-hop, ambient, and electronic music through production centered on atmosphere and rhythm.

The album alternates instrumental compositions with guest vocal performances by Amel Larrieux, Maxwell, Leroy Osbourne, and Bahamadia, making the shifting voices and textures a central part of its identity.

Sweetback allowed Matthewman, Hale, and Denman to independently explore musical elements developed through their work with Sade, extending them into more experimental and electronic territory.
