The Return – Kamaal Williams

The Return is the first solo album by British keyboardist Kamaal Williams and a work that delves into the contemporary jazz-funk language emerging from the London scene.

After the dissolution of the influential Yussef Kamaal project—formed alongside drummer Yussef Dayes—Williams chose to continue exploring the same creative territory: repetitive grooves, collective improvisation, and a rhythmic approach deeply linked to club culture.

The album was built from long improvisation sessions with bassist Pete Martin and drummer Josh “MckNasty” McKenzie. From these jams, Williams selected fragments that were later transformed into the final compositions. This process allowed him to capture the spontaneous energy of the moment, an aesthetic that defines much of British contemporary jazz.

Musically, The Return combines the 1970s jazz-funk tradition with elements of hip-hop and electronica. The textures of the Fender Rhodes, vintage synthesizers, and expansive grooves evoke influences ranging from Herbie Hancock to George Duke, but reinterpreted through a modern sensibility.

More than a mere continuation of his previous work, The Return serves as an aesthetic statement: contemporary jazz understood as a collective process where repetition, rhythm, and improvisation create music that lives as much in the studio as on the dance floor.
