Ambrose Akinmusire – Trumpeter and Composer

Ambrose Akinmusire is a trumpeter and composer born in Oakland, California, whose work occupies a singular place in contemporary jazz through his exploration of sound, composition, and improvisation.

His musical training took him through the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Southern California, and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, where he studied with musicians including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Terence Blanchard. In 2007, he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

His discography includes Prelude...To Cora, When the Heart Emerges Glistening, Origami Harvest, On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment, and Owl Song, alongside projects that extend his musical language into other formats and disciplines.

Throughout his career, Akinmusire has developed an approach to the trumpet in which timbre, breath, silence, and tension become part of the musical discourse, placing experimentation in continuous dialogue with the African American jazz tradition.
