Christian McBride – Bassist and Composer

Christian McBride is an American bassist, composer, arranger, and bandleader whose career has established him as one of the defining voices of contemporary jazz. His musical language combines the traditions of swing with remarkable versatility, moving effortlessly between acoustic trios, big bands, and electric jazz ensembles.

After studying at Philadelphia's High School for Creative and Performing Arts and later at the Juilliard School, McBride launched an early career alongside artists including Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea, continually expanding the expressive possibilities of the double bass.

As a leader, he has developed acclaimed projects such as Inside Straight, New Jawn, Christian McBride Big Band, and Ursa Major, while also serving as Artistic Director of the Newport Jazz Festival and host of NPR's Jazz Night in America.

His approach is distinguished by an unwavering rhythmic foundation, exceptional harmonic authority, and a conception of the double bass as the structural core of the ensemble, consistently placing collective interaction above individual virtuosity.
