Linda Sikhakhane – saxophonist and composer

Linda Sikhakhane is a South African saxophonist, improviser, and composer born in Umlazi, whose artistic vision bridges the cultural roots of the Zulu nation with the avant-garde of contemporary global jazz.

His formal training began at the Siyakhula Music Centre under the guidance of Brian Thusi, continued at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and was later consolidated at The New School in New York after receiving the SAMRO bursary. There, he was mentored by jazz legends such as Billy Harper, Reggie Workman, and Charles Tolliver.

His technical language masterfully combines modal jazz phrasing with the distinctive rhythms and lyricism of South African musical traditions. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with seminal creators including Nduduzo Makhathini, Sibongile Khumalo, and Thandiswa Mazwai.

With acclaimed projects like Two Sides, One Mirror, An Open Dialogue, and Isambulo, Sikhakhane has positioned himself as a pivotal voice in contemporary jazz, characterized by a compositional approach where music functions as a system for spiritual and communal expression.

He is widely recognized for his album iLadi, produced under Blue Note / Universal Music Africa.
