Marquis Hill – Trumpeter and Composer
Marquis Hill is an American trumpeter, composer, and bandleader from Chicago whose work connects contemporary jazz with traditions including post-bop, hip-hop, R&B, neo-soul, and house.
Musically formed in Chicago, he released his debut album New Gospel in 2011 and gained wider international recognition after winning the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Trumpet Competition in 2014.
His discography includes projects such as The Way We Play, Modern Flows Vol. 2, Love Tape, New Gospel Revisited, Rituals + Routines, and Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox.
As a composer and performer, Hill approaches these traditions as interconnected parts of a broader African American musical heritage, developing a body of work in which improvisation, groove, and composition operate within a shared language.
