Artform Revisited – Louis Hayes
In Artform Revisited, Detroit veteran and drummer Louis Hayes—whose trajectory is, in essence, the genealogy of hard-bop—seeks not nostalgia, but relevance. Here, rhythm is a fluid conversation where silence and listening carry the same weight as the strike of the sticks.
The album features a quintet comprised of Abraham Burton (tenor sax), Steve Nelson (vibraphone), David Hazeltine(piano), and Dezron Douglas (double bass). From the spectral intimacy of "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing," where Hayes’ brushes draw subtle textures for the vibraphone to resonate with an almost cinematic quality, to the electric energy of "Cheryl" or "Ray’s Idea," the record reconfigures tradition.
Hayes' original compositions, "Ruby" and "G," act as the final manifesto: proof that his musical language continues to expand. Artform Revisited is a collective space where the language of the past is spoken with the urgency of the present; a testament that mastery resides not in force, but in the ability to elevate every voice that shares the stage.
