Floa – Mammal Hands

Floa, by Mammal Hands, delves into an approach rooted in rhythmic interaction and progressive development. The trio—comprising Jordan Smart (saxophone), Nick Smart (piano), and Jesse Barrett (drums)—articulates music that flows like a cyclic organism, in constant transformation, without ever needing to break its own pulse.

The piano establishes minimal patterns that fold in on themselves, generating a hypnotic architecture. The percussion, heavy with resonances of the tabla as well as rhythms unconventional to Western culture, introduces an organic tension. The saxophone drifts between both like a voice that channels the energy.

The compositions advance through accumulation and displacement. Quiet Fire defines this principle: a contained energy that expands without ever exploding. Kudu pushes toward a more earthly pulse, while The Falling Dream reduces the gesture to its essentials, almost suspended in a logic of crystalline repetition.

Tradition appears diluted across multiple layers: the minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, the spirituality of Pharaoh Sanders, and a melodic sensibility akin to European folk. Nothing imposes itself; everything coexists in a continuous flow.

Floa sustains itself slowly, revealing almost imperceptible variations that ultimately alter the perception of time. It is a record built on reiteration, yet it finds within it a form of constant displacement: a balance between trance, clarity, and drift.
