Joy Ascension – Macha Gharibian
Joy Ascension is the third conceptual manifesto by French-Armenian pianist and vocalist Macha Gharibian—a release where the weight of her Eurasian heritage and the school of contemporary New York jazz converge into a space of absolute artistic sovereignty.
The title, serving as a direct nod to Coltrane, is no mere decorative reference; it is the guiding principle for music that seeks spiritual elevation through the physical pulse of rhythm. The core trio, comprising double bassist Chris Jennings and drummer Dré Pallemaerts, operates with the plasticity of two painters manipulating textures and dynamics in real time, allowing the ensemble to transition seamlessly from rhythmic power to abstraction.
Gharibian’s vocal and instrumental approach possesses a volcanic and magnetic nature: an echo that both strikes and draws you in as the tracks progress. The repertoire unfolds within a circular, hypnotic architecture on pieces like "Georgian Mood" and its sequel "Fight," where the piano and her use of the Fender Rhodes challenge the boundaries of emotional density.
The album expands its aesthetic boundaries by incorporating collaborations with trumpeter Bert Joris, who contributes subtle brushstrokes to the cinematic ballad "The Woman I Am Longing To Be," and multi-instrumentalist Artyom Minasyan, whose doudouk injects an ancestral mysticism into the traditional Armenian track "Sari Siroun Yar." Even when tackling the pop songbook in their reimagining of Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover," the trio dissolves the original language into a hybrid structure of jazz and chamber music.
Joy Ascension stands as the definitive testament of a creator who exposes her vulnerability without compromise, building a transformative and free artistic discourse.
