Legacies – Arturo O’Farrill
For decades, Arturo O’Farrill has built a career as a composer, arranger, and leader of large ensembles. Yet behind that orchestral world remains the pianist who first found his voice through jazz. On Legacies, released by Blue Note Records in 2023, he returns to those beginnings through nine performances that trace the music and memories that have shaped his life.
The encounter takes on special meaning with the presence of his son, drummer Zack O’Farrill, and bassist Liany Mateo. Together, they discover new possibilities in Herbie Hancock’s “Dolphin Dance,” while “Blue State Blues,” an original composition by O’Farrill, reveals a shared understanding that allows the trio to move freely between intensity and playfulness. Their freedom comes from listening to one another, knowing when to step forward and when to leave room for another instrument to find its way.
Family memories surface in “Pure Emotion,” written by his father, Chico O’Farrill. Alone at the piano, Arturo transforms that inheritance into an intimate conversation. Something similar happens in Thelonious Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t,” where his imagination finds space to explore familiar melodies through a deeply personal sensibility.
Legacies brings us closer to a musician who, after years of conducting orchestras and pursuing projects of extraordinary ambition, finds in the simplicity of a piano a way to recognize himself.
