Marine Moods – Nick Walters

Marine Moods is an exercise in sonic cartography where trumpeter Nick Walters reunites his sextet to explore the versatility of water. It is a record captured in the urgency of a single summer day in London, where the ensemble’s cohesion—featuring Rebecca Nash (piano), Tenderlonious (flute and soprano sax), Nim Sadot (bass), Laurie Lowe(drums), and Kudjovi Kush (percussion)—transforms the studio’s heat into an oceanic freshness of organic precision.

The music unfolds as a contemporary jazz-fusion suite that draws its strength from modalism and spirituality. In "Challenger Deep," depth translates into a dense groove that serves as a foundation for Tenderlonious’s flute and Nash’s piano to seek light within the abyss. Walters, from the trumpet, exerts a serene leadership: a composure that allows improvisation to breathe without losing the structural axis.

There is a constant transition between agitation and calm. "Hydrothermal" is sustained by a hypnotic bass line from Nim Sadot, an ultra-funk pulse that pushes the group toward controlled friction, while "Journey for Joan" closes the cycle in contemplative stillness. Here, the ballad strips away the pyrotechnics to embrace a minimalist eloquence, where Nash’s piano and Walters’s muted trumpet pay tribute to memory.

The tradition of spiritual jazz and African rhythms integrates into a language where creative freedom confirms the movement. Marine Moods is, in essence, a dynamic system of shared interactions, a space where Walters’s composition dissolves so the collective can find its own tide.
