NOT TiGHT – DOMi & JD BECK
NOT TiGHT is the recording debut of DOMi & JD BECK, a project led by French keyboardist DOMi Louna and Texan drummer JD Beck that operates as a high-velocity collision between the virtuosity of jazz fusion and the hyperactive aesthetics of digital culture. Shattering genre boundaries through improvisation, the duo translates that innate telepathy into a meticulously structured studio format.
The album finds its strength in an almost cybernetic interplay where DOMi Louna deploys basslines and complex harmonic structures on keyboards with a relentless left hand, while JD Beck executes drum patterns so razor-sharp and accelerated they mirror the language of IDM and processed breakbeats. Pieces like "WHATUP" and "SNiFF" expose a dialogue of absolute rhythmic precision.
The featured guest artists serve as a generational endorsement rather than a defensive shield. Thundercat provides his signature elastic bass on the title track "NOT TiGHT" and on "BOWLiNG," allowing DOMi to focus her attack on synth pyrotechnics. Meanwhile, Herbie Hancock adds vocoder and piano to the stunning "MOON," while vocal contributions from Anderson .Paak on "TAKE A CHANCE" and rhymes from Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes on "PiLOT" directly bridge the gap with hip-hop and neo-soul heritage.
Beyond the dizzying 200 BPM tempos and the persistent satire surrounding their public persona, the work stands out for its remarkable tonal cohesion and warm sound design. DOMi & JD BECK successfully translate the chaos of live improvisation into a domain of vibrant, complex, and deeply contemporary songs.
