Return to Casual – Walter Smith III

Trust between musicians develops over time, but it also depends on their willingness to keep surprising one another. Saxophonist Walter Smith III reunites with musicians who have accompanied him through much of his career on Return to Casual, released by Blue Note Records. The title returns to a conversation that began with Casually Introducing (2006) and continued with Still Casual (2014). Years of shared experience have brought them closer, yet their familiarity now allows them to explore possibilities that might once have seemed beyond reach.

From the opening measures of “Contra,” Taylor Eigsti’s piano, Matt Stevens’ guitar, Harish Raghavan’s double bass, and Kendrick Scott’s drums engage in an exchange of ideas that demands constant attention. Melodies change direction, rhythms shift, and the saxophone finds different ways to respond. When Ambrose Akinmusire enters on “River Styx,” his trumpet opens new possibilities for a conversation that seems to reinvent itself with every passing moment.

There is room here, too, to acknowledge those who are no longer with us. “Shine” remembers Wallace Roney, Jimmy Heath, and Ellis Marsalis, while “REVIVE,” an intimate dialogue between saxophone and piano, honors the memory of Meghan Stabile. Elsewhere, the group's interpretation of Kate Bush’s “Mother Stands for Comfort” reveals another dimension of its sensitivity, while the encounter between Eigsti and keyboardist James Francies on “K8 + BYU$” revisits ideas from the past and carries them in unexpected directions.

Listening to Return to Casual reveals how profoundly a musical relationship can evolve without losing what brought it into being. There is a freedom that comes from knowing one another deeply while remaining curious about what the other musician might play next.
