Side-Eye III+ – Pat Metheny
Some albums function as a statement, and others operate as a recalibration. Side-Eye III+ clearly belongs to the latter: it doesn’t redefine Pat Metheny’s language, but it does reorganize its elements within a broader scale.
After several years moving through solo formats, Metheny returns here to an ensemble logic that isn't limited to the core trio with pianist Chris Fishman and drummer Joe Dyson. Instead, it progressively expands into a device closer to orchestral writing with the incorporation of multiple layers featuring Daryl Johns on double bass, Brandee Younger on harp, and Luis Conte on percussion.
The Side-Eye project, originally conceived as a platform for newer generations, undergoes a significant transformation here: the gesture is no longer about showcasing, but about integrating. The result is not an overt passing of the torch, but rather an absorption into Metheny’s consolidated musical language.
Formally, the album moves between expansive structures and episodic developments where the narrative doesn’t rely on traditional jazz tension, but on the progressive accumulation of layers. In tracks like Don’t Look Down or Make a New World, the music advances through sections that fold over one another, alternating open lyricism with passages of greater harmonic density.
The vocal element—articulated through the ensemble directed by Mark Kibble—introduces a dimension reminiscent of gospel, yet filtered through an aesthetic that avoids direct emphasis. It is not about immediate emotional intensity, but rather an expansion of the harmonic spectrum.
However, this very choice also defines the album's limits. The pursuit of a broad, controlled sonority tends to restrain rhythmic impulse, generating a sense of constant stability that, at times, reduces internal friction. The music flows, but rarely overflows.
Side-Eye III+ sits within this balance between control and openness: a work that reaffirms Metheny’s identity through an expansive logic, closer to the architecture of sound than the urgency of the moment.
