Soley – Grégory Privat

Soley (sun, in Creole) goes beyond being a simple title; it is the thermal coordinate that governs Grégory Privat’s recording debut under his own label, Buddham Jazz Records. Following his time steeped in European formalism alongside Lars Danielsson, the Martinican pianist decides to embark on a new journey, venturing into a territory where Afro-Caribbean heritage and contemporary jazz seamlessly integrate.

The trio format—completed by Chris Jennings on double bass and Tilo Bertholo on drums—operates under the premises of clarity and ease. Far from academic rigidity, the lineup flows through a proposal where electronic textures, soul, and Privat’s classical background coexist.

The album unfolds across fifteen tracks that transition from the emotional density of pieces like Exode—an echo of historical Caribbean memory pierced by an unshakeable melodic luminosity—to the magnetic minimalism of D.N.A., sustained by the precision of Bertholo’s cymbal work. The defining novelty lies in Privat’s own voice, which emerges for the first time as a central tonal resource, weaving lyrical lines that expand the piano's narrative.

Soley avoids shortcuts to concentrate on building an immersive and poetic atmosphere. It is a manifesto of creative maturity and artistic independence: direct, luminous, and rigorously alive jazz.
