The Return – Kamaal Williams
The Return, by London-based keyboardist and producer Kamaal Williams, is an exploration of the groove as the central language of contemporary jazz. Built from improvisations and jam sessions, the album unfolds as a space where jazz-funk, hip-hop, and club culture converge into a deeply organic rhythmic architecture.
Following the dissolution of the Yussef Kamaal project, Williams recaptures the creative pulse that defined that era, transforming it into a more introspective and expansive sonic journey. The Fender Rhodes lines, funk basslines, and dynamic drumming create an atmosphere that breathes between improvisation and the hypnotic repetition of grooves.
In The Return, contemporary jazz appears as music in constant mutation: a territory where collective improvisation and the energy of the moment serve as the creative engine. The result is a record that reaffirms the London scene’s role as one of the most fertile laboratories for jazz today.
