Transcend – Dave Douglas & GIFTS Quintet
Transcend is the embodiment of a spiritual dialogue between the legacy of Duke Ellington and the sonic vanguard of Dave Douglas. The trumpeter convenes the GIFTS Quintet—featuring James Brandon Lewis (tenor saxophone), Rafiq Bhatia (electric guitar), Ian Chang (drums), and Tomeka Reid (cello)—to expand the boundaries of the sacred within contemporary jazz.
The instrumentation, blending subtle electronics with cello textures, redefines the architecture of classic pieces such as "Come Sunday" and "Heaven" while elevating original compositions.
The album does not seek nostalgia; it seeks resonance. Douglas draws on Ellington’s vision of faith and humanity to create a space where collective improvisation and structured writing coexist without hierarchy. It is a work of deep textures in which silence is as powerful as rhythmic eruption. Every timbral decision—from the guitar lines to the cello phrasing—responds to a narrative need to explore the Sacred Concerts through the lens of contemporary jazz.
Transcend is an exercise in musical architecture where technical precision yields to spiritual urgency.
