Scenery in My Story – Zhengtao Pan Jazz Orchestra
Scenery in My Story is the debut studio album by composer, conductor, and arranger Zhengtao Pan, released through the Outside In Music record label. The record documents the author's cultural and geographical transition from Shanghai to Boston, utilizing the jazz big band structure as a conceptual vehicle to unify his influences from Chinese folklore, classical impressionism, and cinematic music.
The repertoire is mostly composed of original pieces written by Pan, alongside unique reinterpretations of standards such as "It Could Happen to You" and "Nardis."
The large-scale instrumentation features prominent soloists from the international scene, including saxophonist Walter Smith III, flutist Itai Kriss, trumpeter and vocalist Benny Benack III, and saxophonist Andrew Gould, achieving a precise balance between the complexity of written arrangements and expressive freedom in the improvisational sections.
