STR4TA – British Groove and Jazz-Funk Heritage
STR4TA is the meeting of two essential figures in British music culture: DJ, curator, and global tastemaker Gilles Peterson, and composer and multi-instrumentalist Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick.
The project emerged as an exploration of Brit-funk, a scene that in the 1980s reinterpreted American funk and jazz through the cultural lens of the Black British diaspora. In this context, groups like Incognito played a fundamental role in expanding that musical language.
With STR4TA, Peterson and Maunick recapture the experimental and communal spirit of that era: music recorded with urgency, grooves built on intuition, and an aesthetic that prioritizes live energy. The result is a project that bridges past and present, proving that British jazz-funk remains a living source of inspiration for new generations of musicians and listeners alike.
