Unspoken – Julie Campiche

Unspoken is the debut solo album by Julie Campiche and one of her most personal works. Conceived as a series of sonic portraits, the record focuses on women whose stories have been silenced, made invisible, or relegated to the shadows. Moving away from an explicitly discursive approach, the album builds an emotional narrative where each piece functions as an evocation.

The harp is the core of the project, but its treatment shatters any traditional expectations. Through electronics, loops, and extended techniques, Julie Campiche develops a polyphonic language where the instrument is transformed into rhythm, texture, and voice.

The music oscillates between the minimalist and the expressive, generating tensions that reflect the themes at hand: identity, invisibility, and resistance. Each composition is linked to a specific figure or concept:

• Anonymous: Inspired by Virginia Woolf, it builds a chorus of female voices as an act of collective affirmation.
• Grisélidis Réal: A sonic portrait of the writer and activist.
• Rosa: A tribute to the anonymous women who sustain everyday life.
• Las Patronas: Dedicated to the Mexican collective that supports migrants.
• Tarana Burke: An evocation of the MeToo movement.

Each piece articulates sound and meaning without resorting to literal narrative, leaving room for interpretation. Although deeply personal, Unspoken is situated in a territory where the individual connects with the collective. The music does not illustrate; it suggests. It does not explain; it opens questions.

With this work, Julie Campiche expands the boundaries of her artistic language, consolidating a proposal that transcends jazz to sit at the intersection of contemporary music, experimentation, and social reflection.
