Weirdo – Emma-Jean Thackray
Weirdo is the second studio album by British composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Emma-Jean Thackray, released in 2025 through Brownswood Recordings and Parlophone.
Initially conceived around neurodivergence and later transformed by the death of her partner, the album explores grief, mental health, identity, and gratitude through a combination of jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop, pop, and rock.
Thackray wrote, performed, arranged, and produced virtually the entire project, developed primarily from her home studio in South London. Reggie Watts appears on “Black Hole,” while Kassa Overall features on “It’s Okay.”
Across 19 tracks, Weirdo uses the contrast between vulnerable lyrics, jazz harmonies, synthesizers, funk rhythms, and elements of popular music to construct a deeply autobiographical work without being confined to a single musical tradition.
